what can i do with a calculator solar panel?

i have to make a model of alternative energy for class. i chose solar power but the only solar panel i can get are the ones on calculators. i need something to make with it. any ideas?

Solar power alternative energy is not limited to photovoltaic (PV) panels.

A small panel like you described produces such a small amount of current you would be hard pressed to even light an LED (ok, you cant even do that). If you have access to 16 of them then a 4×4 series X parallel array could give you enough amps and volts to demonstrate something. Still, you may only be able to light a single LED, charge a battery (like one AAA), or perhaps run a very small DC motor. If you feel you must use solar PV, then there are my suggestions.

If you are not limited to solar PV then consider solar heating. You could make a parabolic trough or a simpler flat panel. Perhaps if you get a bunch of small mirrors (or cover cardboard cutouts with aluminum foil) you could make a model like one of those solar power plants.

Now for a quick comment on efficacies.

The very best silicone solar PV cells out there brag of been about 19% efficient but the ones in a calculator are more like 12%.
A parabolic trough can be 60-80% efficient.
